Interesting Poker Terms You Can Use to Impress Everyone-Part I

If you are a poker enthusiast and wants to impress your friends or fellow players with your vast knowledge of the game, here are some really cool and amusing terms and nicknames you can use on the poker table:

Anna Kournikova

Refers to Ace and King cards. It means “hand that looks good but wins rarely”.

American Airlines/Bullets/Rockets/Snake Eyes

Hole Cards A A.

Big Slick

Hole cards Ace and King (suited or not suited).

Crabs

Hold cards 3 and 3, as 3 look likes a crab from sideways.

Crying Call

When a player makes the call in the last betting round without any winning expectations. It means player has “little-to-no” confidence in his hand and he is calling just because of curiosity or other reasons.

Dead Man’s hand

Hole cards Black A and Black 8. American folk hero Wild Bill Hickok was shot in the back of his head when he was holding this hand.

Doyle Brunson Hand

Hole cards 10 and 2 (not suited). It is named after Poker legend Doyle Brunson won WSOP two times with this hand in 1976 and 1977.

Another hand A and Q is also called Doyle Brunson hand due to Brunson’s distaste for this hand.

Double gutter

To make a straight, draw to 8 outs is called double gutter. Ex- If the player holds 5 6 and board shows 8 4 2, he required 7 or 3 to make the straight.

Donk Bet

Donk refers to a poor player or a poor move. A donk bet is when a preflop caller leads out a bet postflop, before the preflop raiser (aggressor) out of position.

Flat Tyre

Hole cards J 4 (suited or not suited).

Fish Hooks

Hole Cards J J as the letter J looks resembles a fish hook.

Gutterball

Inside straight draw. Ex. – If the player holds 9 10 and the board shows K, Q, and 6.

Ladies

Hole cards Q Q.

King Kong/Cowboys

Hole cards K K ( a big hand).

Nut Hand

Nut hand is the best possible hand a player have. The second nut and third nut hands are the second and third best possible hand a player can have in a given situation.

Paint/Face card/Court Card

Any Card with a picture/face on it (Jack, Queen, or King). They are called court cards as these are the highest value cards other than Ace.

Wash

Mixing the cards before dealing to ensure randomness. The dealer spreads the cards on the table and then mixes them before shuffling. Dealer usually washes the cards whenever he brings new deck on the table to play with.
